Since it started 35 years ago, the VMA’s have been THE place for celebrities to have a bit of fun on the red carpet. It’s well known for turning iconic looks, including Madonna’s ‘BOYTOY’ belt (1984), Rose McGowan’s naked dress (1998) and Lady Gaga’s meat dress in 2010. The antics don’t stop on the red carpet either, we all remember a certain Kanye stage invasion (was that really 10 years ago? ?) and now worshipped performances like Britney’s snake set.
In a night that crowned Taylor Swift’s ‘You Need To Calm Down’ music video of the year, this year saw some great fashion and beauty looks. The red carpet consisted of colour, dramatic makeup and two real life snakes. Here’s our favourite lewks of the night:
This year has really been Lizzo’s breakthrough year. You can’t listen to the radio without getting slapped multiple times with a Lizzo song, not that we are complaining. She oozes confidence, teaches self love and (with that hair ?) is firmly on our best beauty list. Lizzo’s hairstylist, Shelby Swain, really outdid herself with this glam beehive. Even though that’s a custom Moschino gown, all eyes are on the hair.
Camilla Cabello’s song with Shawn Mendes, Senorita, was twice a winner at the VMA’s. With that long mane and mermaid inspired waves, Camilla is always a winner in our eyes. Her makeup artist, Patrick Ta, used only drugstore makeup to achieve this soft glam look. That means we have no excuses, we can get red carpet glam with L’oreal.
H.E.R’s braids, complete with styled baby hair is the definition of effortlessly cool on the red carpet (those killer shades aswell!). Oh, and she brought her snake. But she wasn’t the only one to pair her outfit with a snake (don’t you hate it when that happens?). YouTuber Tana Mongeau also carried a python as a homage to Britney’s ‘”I’m a slave for you” performance in 2001.
The other half of “Senorita” is Shawn Mendes. His hair was giving us Prince Eric vibes. Perfectly tousled yet never out of place, and that’s harder to achieve than it looks. 10/10 from us.
Artist of the year nominee, Halsey, showed her pride on the red carpet with rainbow roots – a trend we are fully on board with. It’s something a bit different and we love that! Subtle yet statement worthy, a great way to add a flair of personality.
FKA Twigs was nominated for 3 VMA’s and, boy, are we glad she showed up. Although her song ‘Cellophane’ didn’t win, she’s winning best dressed lists left, right and center. Petite red ringlets and matching makeup? A big fat yes. A look equal parts delicate and drama, she’s like a walking renaissance painting.
Everyone’s favourite GLOW actress showing us that sometimes, less is more. Those healthy balayaged locks have got us swooning and it feels achievable, like maybe we could get our hair to do this. A half-up-half-down style is always great to dress down for work or dress up for the VMA’s, apparently. Alison Brie leak your haircare routine pls, we need it.
